Professional Hair Dryer Tips

Many hair dryers now have the description 'professional' or 'salon' in their product names, but not all are genuine professional products. True professional dryers have several distinctive features and are developed to withstand the rigor of constant salon use.

What is the difference between a true professional dryer and a standard dryer?

  • True professional blow dryers have an AC motor. This is a motor with a longer life than consumer (non-salon) dryers.
  • The design of the body with its narrow barrel nozzle combined with the AC motor which give these dryers a faster airflow.
  • True professional dryers also have a true cold shot (as opposed to 'cool'). This sets the style even better than the standard 'cool' shot.

Professional Hair dryer Tips

  • Always point the airflow down the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle and encourage shine.
  • Take care not to hold the hair dryer too near the scalp as it can cause burns.
  • When you have finished blow-drying allow the hair to cool thoroughly, and then check that the hair is completely dry. Warm hair often gives the illusion of dryers while it is, in fact, still damp.
  • Never use a hairdryer without its filter in place - hair can easily be drawn into the machine.

How to dry your hair like a professional?

First of all, it is important that you have shampooed and conditioned your hair well. Towel dry your hair by squeezing the towel, never rub it as that will split the ends. Comb the hair and make sure all of the knots are out. Now you're ready to blow dry your hair.

  • Apply the styling product of choice and massage it evenly through the hair.
  • Start at the back and dry the section in the nape of the neck first. If you have long hair you may need to use clip to separate the sections.
  • Work your way up the back of your head. Always remember to direct the airflow from root to end. This will prevent the cuticle being frayed and the hair looking dull.
  • Keep working until reach the crown. You may want some extra body, so hold the dryer on the brush for a few seconds then remove the heat and leave the brush in place, until it cools. This is like a mini set.
  • Blow-dry the front and sides with the dryer held high or far away, you don't want to scorch the hair. Again, to set the look, hold the dryer on the brush and the let it cool.
  • When the entire head is dry you can apply some shine or cream to the style before you brush it into the final look.
  • Practice with the dryer off, in front of the mirror, just to become accustomed to working with a reverse image. Put your head down and hold the dryer below them to give extra body.
  • You are not limited to one look. Use your imagination and try several ways to style your hair.
